Title: Prevention of Abuse, Neglect and Financial Exploitation of Elders and Disabled Adults
Presenter: Karl D. Jones, MD
Type of Presentation: Concurrent Workshop Session 1A
Date/Time: Monday, Oct 17, 2005
10:15 am – 12:00 noon
Abstract: In this workshop session, the area of financial exploitation of the elderly will be discussed. Financial exploitation of the elderly has grown to epidemic proportions, however, it is not well recognized by professionals or the general public. This workshop is designed to give the professional a better understanding of the statistics and implications of financial exploitation of the elderly, the governing Florida Statues, the physical and psychological causes that may predispose an elderly person to be exploited, and the cost of stigma for the older person. The session should increase the professional's understanding of how to act as an advocate for the elderly to decrease the fear of retaliation, through proper identification and reporting.
Goal: To inform the participants about the area of financial exploitation of the elderly and the proper way to advocate for and protect older adults who are being exploited, including decreasing the stigma of exploitation.
Objective 1: The participants will identify, using victim statistics, the proportion of the elderly population who are believed to be financially exploited, and recognize that this is considered to be of epidemic proportions.
Objective 2: Participants will distinguish three symptoms of financial exploitation in an older adult.
Objective 3: Participants will list two actions the professional may use to increase the awareness of financial exploitation in the elderly and to reduce stigma.
Objective 4: Participants will recall, at least one way to report financial exploitation of the elderly.
