| Abstract: | Eight million older adults are alcohol or medication dependent, including a third who experience late onset addiction. This number will explode as the baby boomers age. Older adults comprise a vastly under-treated group, due to a lack of awareness and understanding of risk factors and symptoms that mimic other conditions. Denial by both the older person, and the family is a factor. How do health, medical and social services professionals and others who work with older adults identify warning signs for addiction? In this workshop, assessment and brief intervention guidelines are outlined within the context of respectful communications and family involvement. Why is age-responsive addiction treatment important and how does it work? This model addresses the high rate of multiple diagnoses, general physical and mental condition, and generational value systems are also addressed during the workshop. |
| Goal: | To increase the participants' knowledge of warning signs of senior addiction, intervention guidelines, and how and why treatment restores quality of life and health for seniors. |
| Objective 1: | Participants will identify possible atypical or non-specific presentation of alcohol or drug dependency in older adults. |
| Objective 2: | Participants will recognize age specific issues for prevention and treatment, and identify the components of a bio-psychosocial assessment. |
| Objective 3: | Participants will define the need for sensitivity training as important in working with older adults. |
